Frequently Asked Questions
Blockstack provides user-controlled login and storage that enable you to take back control of your identity and data. It is a decentralized computing network and app ecosystem. The apps in Blockstack protect your digital rights and are powered by the Stacks blockchain.
Trove is built on top of Blockstack. The reason we chose Blockstack is because it provides the perfect technology infrastructure to easily build blockchain apps. Blockstack ecosystem abstracts away the blockchain complexity for authentication & data storage. Read more here.
Trove uses Blockstack technology to have user-owned identity meaning that you own your login & True data ownership meaning that your data is 100% private and only you can grant access to apps. Never worry about privacy breaches again!
The identity in Blockstack is user-owned. You own your login. Under the hood, Blockstack uses blockchain to keep everything secure and private. The same identity can be used to access any other app in the Blockstack ecosystem.
When an ID is created in Blockstack, it issues some storage space. This system that handles storage is called Gaia. Any app related data for the apps is stored in Gaia. However, Blockstack also allows users to choose their own Gaia hub and to configure a back-end provider to store data with. Learn more here.
Gaia is not a database. Data are stored in one or many text format files (JSON) within the app’s hub in Gaia.
This depends on the app. Developers can choose to store files encrypted or in plain text. In Trove, bookmarks are encrypted. Only the key in your Blockstack ID can decrypt the data from your Gaia.
No. The data (bookmarks) stored in your personal storage (Gaia) are encrypted. No one can access or read your data except you (your identity).
One of the most common questions we have been receiving is regarding decentralization. Several users new to the Blockstack ecosystem have asked, “If all of my bookmarks are in the same place, how is it decentralized?”. Well, there are a few ways of thinking about this. From the perspective of the developers, all of the data pertaining to the app are scattered in several Gaia storage all over. There is no possible way for the makers of an app to have all of the data of all of the users in a centralized repository. This makes it decentralized. Also, no central repository implies no machine learning algorithm tinkering to garner patterns and trends on collective data.
You can easily save your bookmarks through our web app or browser extensions. We have plans to launch a mobile app (Android & iOS) in the future. Please see our roadmap.
Yes. Currently browser extensions for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are available. We have plans to launch extensions for Safari, Brave and Opera.
